Why dreams are not equal to goals.

What's your biggest dream? No, I don't mean a trip to Disney World. Although that is a great goal! In fact, it's a goal of mine. But that's just it- It's a goal, not a dream. We use these two words interchangeably, but there is a difference.

A goal has an end. You can check it off a list. It can be completed and then move on to the next. A dream is something to be lived. It's what drives you to move forward and determines your goals. Dreams grow and evolve as you do. To help remember this important difference, I created this handy acronym. Dream BIGGER:

Broad

Immeasurable

God-given

Grows bigger

Evolves over time

Resonates with our spirit & God's word

You know those really big, too-good-to-be-true dreams you've had? The ones that maybe you don’t even let yourself entertain? I dare to say that those dreams are probably the ones you should be going after. It can be scary, but that’s when faith steps in.

God's Plans For You

I used to have Jeremiah 29:11 on my license plate when I lived in Nashville. It’s a popular verse. You’ve probably heard it.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

But most people probably don’t know the following verses without looking them up.

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (v. 12-13, emphasis added)

It's basically the instruction manual to live out God's plans for you. AND it comes with a promise! Let's read it again:

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (v. 12-13, emphasis added)

When we have a dream in our heart, there’s a very good chance God put it there. So go talk to Him about it. Pray. Search God’s Word for wisdom. Seek godly counsel from trusted friends or people in your faith community.

When you seek God first, your dreams will line up with His amazing plans for you. Don't worry about getting off track. If that happens, He'll redirect you. God’s good like that!

It Won't Be Easy

If your dream doesn't scare you, you’re not dreaming big enough. #isaidwhatisaid

I don’t mean that as an insult or to put you down. I just trust God at His word. In a previous post, I shared this verse from 1 Corinthians 2, “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.” (v.9)

If God says that He has great plans for us, plans that no one can even imagine- I believe Him! If God said it would be easy and we could make those dreams a reality without any help, I'd believe Him then, too. However, to the best of my knowledge, it doesn't say that anywhere in the Bible. That wouldn’t be faith. That would be self-sufficiency. We're meant to depend on Him. HIS grace is sufficient. (Trust me, I have that tattooed on my back. But you also fact check in 2 Cor. 12:9)

Faith is stepping out into the unknown, believing that God will make a way. We can have a plan and goals to get there, but ultimately there’s going to have to be divine provision. Now I have been told that I have the gift of faith. I have faith to go around. But I also recognize that this is a gift. Thankfully, we only need the faith of a mustard seed. (Which isn't a lot, btw.)

Planning and dreaming and vision boarding is my jam! I've got stickers and felt pens, planners and journals, and washi tape in abundance! If you don't, that's ok. Just run to your local craft store real quick. I'll wait...

Whether or not you have a mini stationary store in your home like I do, God has a bigger dream for YOU. Seriously! Part of my dream is to help others live the dream life God has for them. This is what inspired me to start offering dream mentoring services. God gave me an opportunity to use my gifts and passions to help others get clarity on their dreams! I will never stop being in awe of how He works!

So what is dream mentoring?

I work with clients to sift out their goals from the dreams. We look at what has been holding them back and what they do well. Together we prayerfully create a plan to start living out that God-given dream! Because remember, goals are for completing, dreams are for living.
